Diamond Beach, a stunning black-sand stretch along the Breidamerkursandur glacial plain, lies near Iceland’s Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon on the South Coast. Visitors can reach this breathtaking destination via the Ring Road, whether on a guided tour , or on self-drive trips. Travellers leaving from the capital Reykjavík can make the drive in six to seven hours, but since the drive along the South Coast is one of the most scenic drives in Iceland, you may want to make the drive in two days to get the most out of the trip. If you’re planning on visiting the Diamond Beach, Vík is a great place to rest along the way.
Why visit Diamond Beach?
At the beach, icebergs from the Jökulsárlón lagoon wash ashore, creating a striking contrast between the crystal-clear ice and the volcanic black sand, making it a popular destination for photographers and nature enthusiasts. It’s also a great spot for wildlife observation, where seals are often seen, and orcas can sometimes be spotted from the shore.
In addition to taking in the sights and taking some striking photos, visitors can also view the nearby Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon up close by taking a boat tour, which allows them to glide among the floating icebergs. There are two main types of boat tours available:
Amphibian Boat Tours : These are large, sturdy boats that travel on both land and water, ideal for groups. Tours usually last about 30-40 minutes and offer views of the icebergs, wildlife, and the surrounding glacier from a comfortable distance.
Zodiac Boat Tours : These smaller, faster boats provide a more adventurous experience, allowing closer access to the icebergs and glacier. Zodiac tours typically last about an hour and are guided by experts who share information about the lagoon’s natural history and the icebergs.

Interested in learning more about this beach? Or keen to see it IRL? Read on to find out where the black Diamond Beach in Iceland got its name and how to visit it.
- Explore all Iceland vacation packages to find your ideal itinerary.
Why is it called Diamond Beach?
The real name of Diamond Beach is Fellsfjara, a stretch of black sand belonging to the greater Breiðamerkursandur outwash plain. But its jewel-like nickname comes from the chunks of ice that decorate the beach all year long.
Icebergs from the nearby Breiðamerkurjökull glacier break away and bob through the famous Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon before setting out to sea. Some blocks of ice get stranded on the beach, creating the illusion of large diamonds.
The phenomenon is striking because of the ice’s bright color and the beach’s dark sand.

A self-drive itinerary is the best way to see this unique black sand beach. Rent a car and drive along Route 1, stopping to take in the sights you want to see at your own pace.

FAQs about Diamond Beach
To help you prepare for your visit, we’ve answered top questions about Diamond Beach:
1. Where is it located?
Diamond Beach is located in southeast Iceland, right by the iconic Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. Once you reach the lagoon, you’ll cross a single-track bridge. Take the first right for the Diamond Beach parking lot.
2. How far away from Reykjavík is it?
The beach is located around 390 kilometers (242 miles) from the capital of Iceland, Reykjavík. That’s around 5–6 hours of non-stop driving. With the extra daylight of summer, it’s feasible to make it in one day. That said, we recommend breaking up the journey.
Make this a multi-day adventure for a more leisurely pace and to fit in more attraction breaks. A popular place to sleep along the way is the Vík area.
- See Diamond Beach on a 5-day Iceland itinerary.
3. Is there parking at Diamond Beach?
Yes, there is a parking lot right by the Ring Road. It’s only a short walk to the beach from there.
4. Why is the ice blue?
You might find that the visually mesmerizing chunks of ice scattered around Diamond Beach are a bit blue. In fact, the ice comes in a variety of shapes, colors, and sizes. Some will be dark or light blue and some even black.
There are different reasons for the variation in color. Blue is often a sign of an older block of ice. Lack of air pockets in the ice may influence the blue shade too.
If you see bits of ice with black in it, they might simply be reflecting the color of the sand. Or they may have volcanic dust inside of them.
These differences are what make Fellsfjara such a cool sight. You’ll walk along the beach and admire the wide variety of icebergs on display.
5. Why is the sand black?
Diamond Beach isn’t the only black beach in Iceland. The country is renowned for its dark sands. You’ll find that it’s the red and golden sand beaches that are unusual here.
There is a simple reason that black sand beaches are so common in Iceland. It’s all thanks to the volcanic landscape of the island.
The black sand is mostly made up of basalt, which is lava that cooled rapidly after contact with the sea. The shattered basalt gets smaller and smaller over time becoming sand.

6. Can I swim at Diamond Beach?
Sadly, no. You shouldn’t try to swim when you visit Diamond Beach and many other beaches in Iceland. In fact, it’s best if you stay clear of the waterline as much as possible. The tides and currents by the south coast can change quickly and be very strong.
Another reason is that you might find it very cold. For example, in summer water temperatures average around 10°C (50°F). Definitely chilly!
If you’d like to take a dip while in Iceland, why not visit the Fontana spa in Laugarvatn? Or another great option is the Nauthólsvík geothermal beach in Reykjavík. You can even safely swim outside of the heated area.

- Watch your footing, so you don’t trip, as some icebergs can be concealed in the sand
- Do not climb on an iceberg, they can be slippery or have sharp edges
- And most importantly, never climb on floating ice, as this could be dangerous. This is true on the beach and at the glacier lagoon.

The Diamond Beach
All about diamond beach iceland.
If you’ve heard of the Glacier Lagoon at Jökulsárlón , you might have heard about another stunning spectacle nearby.
The incredible icebergs that calve from the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier tongue will float around the Glacier Lagoon for some time, even years, before the tides finally pull them out to the Atlantic Ocean.
Once captured by the sea, the subtle sculpturing of the icebergs in the Glacier Lagoon is quickly replaced by pounding waves and the fierce winds that cross this dramatic black sand beach.
Those gigantic chunks of ice are soon reduced into bizarre shapes and sizes, ending up as tiny glittering fragments scattered like precious jewels on a velvet cushion.
This is the Diamond Beach!
No trip to this part of Iceland is complete without a stroll along this astonishing coastline.
Here’s everything you need to know about Iceland´s Diamond Beach.
Where is the Diamond Beach in Iceland?
Iceland´s Diamond Beach is in southeast Iceland, about 375 kilometers from Iceland’s capital, Reykjavík.
Driving there will take about six hours altogether.
It’s a few minutes walk from the Glacier Lagoon at Jökulsárlón.
What’s the Diamond Beach like?
The Diamond Beach is on the seaward side of the Ring Road, compared to the Glacier Lagoon at Jökulsárlón, which lies just inland.
The Breiðamerkurjökull glacier tongue used to reach as far as the sea, with its icebergs calving directly into the ocean.
Since the 1930s, the glacier tongue has retreated further inland, leaving the Glacier Lagoon carved out of the ground behind it.
That means the icebergs now calve from the glacier several kilometers away.
As a result, the bergs take much longer to reach the ocean, eventually heading down the river Jökulsá, which connects the lagoon to the Atlantic.
When that happens, the wind and the tides scatter the remaining fragments along a black volcanic sand beach, stretching as far as the eye can see.
You can walk amongst these fabulous fragments and see icebergs at all stages of melting until there’s nothing less than tiny pieces left!
The contrast between the stark black sands and the gleaming white and blue ice fragments creates images you’ll never forget.
Like the icebergs in the Glacier Lagoon, some of the “Diamonds” will be striped with black volcanic ash, reminders of the volcanoes that rock Iceland when they want to!
How did Iceland’s Diamond Beach get its name?
The “proper” Icelandic name for this stretch of coast is Breiðamerkursandur, which means Breiðamerkur beach.
Breiðamerkursandur is a glacial outwash plain, and it’s more than 18 kilometers wide.
The Diamond Beach is the popular name for this part of the coastline, but some locals might call it Fellsfjara.
Eystri-Fellsfjara is on the eastern side of the river, and Vestri-Fellsfjara is on the west.
Nobody knows who came up with the Diamond Beach instead, but everyone agrees that it’s a better name due to the diamond shaped ice!
What facilities does the Diamond Beach offer?
There are no facilities at all on the Diamond Beach, so if you’re hungry or want to use the restroom, take advantage of the services at the café in the Glacier Lagoon, just a few minutes away.
When is the best time to visit the Diamond Beach in Iceland?
Icebergs “calve” from the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier tongue as soon as the spring thaw begins, so the best time to visit the Diamond Beach is from April onwards.
When winter arrives, the lagoon will freeze over, trapping the icebergs in place until the subsequent thaw. That means very few fragments will escape to the shoreline, so the Diamond Beach will be less of a spectacle.
So, our Glacier Lagoon tours follow that natural pattern, with trips available for booking when the views are at their best!
As with all trips in Iceland, the weather is the most critical factor; of course, it’s very unpredictable. So we’ll read the weather forecast to ensure you have the best experience possible.
What should I bring with me to the Diamond Beach?
Bring a camera. Or your smartphone. You’re going to take a LOT of pictures!
As always, dress in layers that are comfortable and easy to take off. It’s a long drive, and the temperatures will vary, so you need to be prepared.
Bring scarves, gloves, hats, windproof pants, and sturdy shoes.
Depending on the season, you might need all of these!
Thermal undershirt
Thermal leggings/tights
Thick socks
Long-sleeved shirt
Warm fleece
Touch screen gloves (to access your phone’s camera) and mittens
Heavy-duty waterproof parka
Safety at Iceland’s Diamond Beach
Unlike Reynisfjara (Black Sand Beach) , the Diamond Beach is not dangerous for visitors.
Just keep clear of the water’s edge and watch the waves.
And don’t even think about swimming – the water is freezing!
But it’s essential to remember one more thing.
Do not stand on the icebergs.
It may seem like a great idea, but the icebergs are unstable, toppling over if you try to climb on top.
Don’t risk injury from a fall or a soaking if you land in the freezing waters of the Atlantic.
No picture is worth risking your life!
We offer a range of Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach tours for you to choose from, with different schedules and formats.
Location and geological formation of Diamond Beach
Located on the southern coast of Iceland, Diamond Beach is a captivating destination that offers a unique blend of natural beauty and geological wonders. Situated near the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, this beach is known for its black sands and shimmering ice diamonds.
The Diamond Beach formed as a result of the neighboring Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. The lagoon is home to the greater Breiðamerkursandur glacial plain, Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, which flows into the Atlantic Ocean. As the glacier melts, it produces huge chunks of floating ice that break off and float towards the shore. These ice chunks, often referred to as "icebergs," are then washed ashore by the waves, creating a stunning display of ice diamonds on the beach.
The black sands of Diamond Beach provide a striking contrast against the crystal-clear ice, making the scenery even more mesmerizing. This unique geological phenomenon attracts visitors from all over the world, eager to witness the beauty of nature in its purest form.
Unique features of Diamond Beach
Diamond Beach is renowned for its unique features that set it apart from any other beach in the world. The most prominent feature is, of course, the ice diamonds that adorn the shoreline. These ice chunks come in various sizes and shapes, ranging from small pieces to massive formations that can reach several meters in height.
The constantly changing landscape of Diamond Beach is another feature that makes it truly special. In addition to the ice diamonds, Diamond Beach is also home to an abundance of birdlife. The beach serves as a nesting ground for various bird species, including Arctic terns, puffins, and seagulls. These birds add an extra layer of beauty to the already stunning surroundings, creating a harmonious blend of nature's wonders.
Wildlife and marine life at Diamond Beach for Nature Lovers
Diamond Beach is not only a haven for birdlife but also a paradise for marine life. As the ice diamonds make their way to the shore, they become home to a myriad of marine creatures. Seals can often be seen lounging on the ice, soaking up the sun and enjoying the serenity of their icy habitat.
If you're lucky, you might even spot a whale or two in the distance. The waters surrounding Diamond Beach are known for their rich marine ecosystem, attracting various species of whales, including humpbacks and orcas. Witnessing these majestic creatures in their natural habitat is an experience that will stay with you forever.

Diamond Beach Travel Guide
The Diamond Beach is a strip of black sand belonging to the greater Breidamerkursandur glacial plain, located by Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon on the South Coast of Iceland.
To reach Diamond Beach, check out Iceland's largest selection of Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon tours . Those who join certain guided trips, such as this 6-Day Summer Ring Road Tour , will have an opportunity to explore it, as will those on self-drive excursions such as this 7-Day Winter Road Trip . It can also be accessed from the Ring Road by those who rent a car .
At the Diamond Beach, the icebergs that fill the Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon wash up on shore, creating a stark contrast with the volcanic black sand. This beautiful display makes it a favorite location for photographers and nature lovers.
Wildlife enthusiasts also frequent the site as many seals call the beach home, and it is one of the best places in the country to see orcas from the shore.
To stay near the Diamond Beach, book accommodations near the glacier lagoon to have easy access to this beautiful natural wonder.
Breidamerkursandur
Breiðamerkursandur is a glacial outwash plain located in the municipality of Hornafjordur. The sand stretches approximately 18 kilometers along Iceland’s South Coast , more specifically from the foot of Kviarjokull Glacier to the famed glacier lagoon Jokulsarlon. This lagoon sits by the foot of Breidamerkurjokull Glacier .
Both glaciers are among the 30 outlets of Vatnajokull , Europe’s largest ice cap and the central feature of the Vatnajokull National Park. Many of these are seen en route to Diamond Beach as you travel along the South Coast.
The outwash plain was formed when three of Vatnajökull’s outlet glaciers, Breidamerkurjokull, Hrutarjokull, and Fjallsjokull, flowed forward due to volcanic activity. This ground the rocks of the underlying surface, creating and pushing forward the glacial sediments.
Such sand plains are a common part of the Icelandic landscape, due to the island being volcanically active as well as boasting numerous ice caps.
Jokulsarlon Icebergs
Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon is one of the most famous and visited attractions in Iceland. Floating on the lagoon are countless icebergs that have broken off the resident glacier, creating an ever-changing scenery of incredible beauty.
The river Jokulsa connects the lagoon to the Atlantic Ocean, meaning that these icebergs eventually drift out to sea, where they are polished by the waves before floating back to the black sands of Breidamerkursandur. The name ‘Diamond Beach’ thus comes from the white ice on the black sand, which appears like gemstones or diamonds, as they often glisten in the sun.
Safety at the Diamond Beach
Diamond Beach is a safe place for any responsible traveler; unlike Reynisfjara , another South Coast black sand beach where sneaker waves and rip currents are notorious for whisking unwitting tourists out to sea. However, there are still dangers to consider at the Diamond Beach.
The main one being the icebergs themselves. Under no circumstance should you climb upon an iceberg due to its slippery surfaces and sharp edges.
This is especially the case if the iceberg is at all in the water, as it could flip and trap you underneath or else be pulled out to sea by a current with you on it.
The risk of injury and illness in the form of hypothermia is so great that extortionate fines exist to deter any ‘rebels’ looking for a thrill-seek. These have only come about due to serious incidents to protect not only tourists at the lagoon but also guides and staff who may feel obligated to embark on a dangerous rescue if they see someone at risk.
Where to Stay Near the Diamond Beach
An excellent choice for budget travelers is the welcoming Hali Country Hotel , located just a short drive from the beach and providing a cozy, rustic atmosphere.
You could also explore accommodations in Hofn , the closest town about an hour from Diamond Beach. The beautiful Fosshótel Vatnajökull is a great option, or you can go for the cozy Arnanes Country Hotel .
From high-end luxury to affordable comfort, you'll find many accommodation options near Diamond Beach to match your travel style. Just make sure to book with good notice to ensure availability.
