Best Things to Do in Tribeca

Visiting Tribeca (“ Tri angle Be low Ca nal Street”) is a study in contrast where storied cast-iron buildings with ornate facades clash against the soaring skyscrapers of Lower Manhattan. Billed as New York’s bohemian alcove, perhaps no other neighborhood has gone through more substantial change in the past two decades.

Once an abandoned outpost of the Financial District, artists and stalwart neighbors banned together to breathe new life into the neighborhood. Today, Tribeca is considered one of the wealthiest areas in Manhattan best known for the slew of celebrities calling the zip code home, like Robert De Niro, Beyoncé and Taylor Swift.

Compact and charismatic, the neighborhood is ripe for exploration year-round. If you plan to visit, here’s a roundup of the best things to do in Tribeca, New York City (from a local’s perspective).

Ghostbusters Headquarters, Firestation in Tribeca NYC

Instagram: Ghostbusters Headquarters Address: 14 N Moore St, New York

Any Ghostbusters fans in the house? Then the fire station at 14 North Moore Street should look familiar to you, it’s home to Ghostbusters Headquarters! The bright red doors of Hook & Ladder Company 8 have served as a backdrop for thousands of photos over the years, you couldn’t miss them if you tried.

Funny enough, the firehouse was selected for the supernatural comedy franchise because the script envisaged Ghostbusters as a public service (much like a fire department) and one of the actors liked the look of this particular firehouse.

Decades later and the firehouse remains one of the top attractions in Tribeca. Fans make pilgrimages to take photos with the full-size replica Ghostbusters sign (which was donated to the firehouse in 2021). But take note, Hook & Ladder Company 8 is a working firehouse so you’ll need to be mindful of keeping the egress clear if taking photos.

Skybridge Tribeca

Address: 9 Jay St, New York, NY

An inquisitive mystery for most people visiting Tribeca, the Staple Street Skybridge suspends three stories in the air and connects two seemingly unrelated buildings. Sound simple enough, but it begs the question: What’s with the bridge?

The cast iron bridge was built in 1907 to serve as a connection between two buildings owned by the New York Hospital (renamed New York Presbyterian in 1998). In the photo above, the building on the left (60 Hudson Street) housed the House of Relief (an emergency room) and the building on the right (9 Jay Street) housed the laundry room.

The hospital closed the House of Relief after World War I, but the footbridge remained. Today, Staple Street Skybridge is the neighborhood’s defining landmark, which is why snapping a photo with it is one of the most iconic things to do in Tribeca.

Grand Banks best things to do Tribeca

Docked inside a historic 1942 wooden schooner-turned-oyster bar, Grand Banks is moored along the southwest edge of Pier 25. The last operable saltbank fishing vessel in existence, it’s the tantalizing oyster menu and breathtaking views that keep the crew busy these days.

The floating seasonal restaurant (open May through October 15) specializes in sustainably harvested oysters and wild-caught fish. Warm and inviting, spending an evening with a plate full of oysters and nautical-themed cocktails is one of the best things to do in Tribeca.

Philip Williams Posters Store, Things to Do Tribeca

Website: Philip Williams Posters Store Address:   122 Chambers St., New York

Home to more than 100,000 authentic posters from 1870 to the present, Philip Williams Posters is one of the largest vintage poster galleries in the world.

A passion project of renowned director and avid collector Philip Williams, the store opened 1973 with the intention of exhibiting (and selling) Williams’ personal collection of vintage posters from around the world.

40 years later and the extensive collection has grown so vast the brick-and-mortar shop expanded to an online presence. Whether you choose to sort through posters online or rummage the racks in person, there’s no denying that visiting Philip Williams Posters is one of the most unique things to do in Tribeca.

Bubby's Pancakes in Tribeca, Best Brunch in Tribeca

Website: Bubby’s Address:   120 Hudson St, New York, NY

American homestyle cooking at its best, Bubby’s is named after the Yiddish for grandmother. This aptly-named restaurant has been charming the neighborhood for more than three decades! Dishing out delectable brunch fare, the long line snacking Bubby’s proves that grabbing brunch at this cozy restaurant is one of the best things to do in Tribeca.

Churning out some of the best pancakes in New York City , Bubby’s biggest draw is the hotcake menu. There’s two varieties to choose from: the chewy sourdough pancakes or award-winning traditional flapjacks (my favorite). Once settled, decide on a topping like blueberry compote, caramelized bananas with toasted walnuts or chocolate chips.

If savory brunch is more your speed, Bubby’s has you covered in that department as well. You can opt for spicy fried chicken sandwiches, creamy cheese grits or huevos rancheros, the variety spans the gamut! Take your time choosing but don’t forget an order of buttermilk biscuits for the table.

The Django Tribe, Jazz Club NYC

Website: The Django Address: 2 6th Avenue The Roxy Hotel, New York Cover Charge & Minimum : $35 per person with 2-drink minimum

Located in the Roxy Hotel, The Django is a popular subterranean jazz club named after renowned jazz musician Django Reinhardt. The brainchild of nightlife virtuosos Vito Dieterle and Joseph Schwartz, the club features vaulted ceilings, exposed brick walls, and dramatic vintage lighting.

The endearing vibes are reminiscent of historic Parisian jazz clubs, which is why spending an evening at The Django is a highlight of visiting Tribeca. But take note, the food leaves much to be desired so grab dinner beforehand.

The Odeon best french onion soup NYC

Website: The Odeon Address: 145 W Broadway, New York, NY

Perhaps best known for expertly-crafted martinis, the Odeon has been a neighborhood hangout for stylish New Yorkers and celebrities since 1980.

Consistently great, the restaurant runs like a well-oiled machine every hour of the day, but there’s something special about weekend brunch. Steak frites and french onion soup are subbed for airy omelettes and stunning french toast.

There are other things on the menu, of course, like croque monsieur and avocado toast, but those are just supporting actors. Omelettes put this place on the map with New York City’s brunch crowd, see what all the fuss is about.

If you’re visiting for dinner, the French onion soup is non-negotiable in my book. I can’t recommend it enough.

Mysterious Book Shop in Tribeca

Website: Mysterious Book Shop Address: 58 Warren St, New York, NY

The Mysterious Book Shop has an interesting claim to fame: Opened in 1979, it’s the oldest mystery book shop in America. Focusing exclusively on mysteries, thrillers, espionage, crime and suspense, the store’s self-published biblomysteries is a hit with book worms. You’ll find new titles mingled with used and rare books as well.

Pier 25 New York City

Website: Pier 25 Address : West St, New York, NY

One of the most relaxing things to do in Tribeca is to hang out on Pier 25, the longest pier at Hudson River Park. Home to miniature golf, volleyball courts and some of the most beautiful children’s playgrounds in the city, the great times are paralleled by the epic views of Lower Manhattan.

brandy library nyc, new york city whisky bar

Website: Brandy Library Address: 25 N Moore St New York, NY 10013

Specializing in rare spirits, swinging by the Brandy Library is non-negotiable for whisky lovers in search of the best things to do in Tribeca. Opened in 2004, the bar has become a go-to spot for locals in need of strong libations.

Upscale yet inviting, you’ll find an extensive menu of whiskies from around the world. From rare drams with eye-watering price tags to exciting cocktails expertly tailored to personal tastes, the knowledgeable bartenders are keen to ensure you have a memorable night.

My husband is a whisky enthusiast and considers opting for the approachable whisky flights at Brandy Library one of the best things to do in Tribeca. Especially if you’re new to the world of whisky and would like some guidance from relaxed experts.

Aire Ancient Baths, Things to Do Tribeca

Website: Aire Ancient Baths Address: 88 Franklin St, New York, NY

Channeling ancient Greek and Roman bathhouses, visiting the spa at Aire Ancient Baths is a rejuvenating Tribeca activity perfect for a rainy autumn day. Cell phones are prohibited and there’s a limited number of people allowed in the bathhouse, so it’s never overcrowded. And yes, massages are also offered. Hard to beat a relaxing spa day while visiting Tribeca.

The One World Trade Center in the Financial District

Website: One World Trade Center Address: 285 Fulton St, New York Admission:   Buy tickets here .

The One World Observatory sits high atop the 102nd floor of the One World Trade Center, making it the highest observation deck in New York City (1,268 feet above street level).

The panoramic views of NYC from this vantage have a tendency to shrink the city’s monolithic skyscrapers in a unique way. Although technically found in the Financial District, it’s so close I’d be remiss not to mention this on my list of the best things to do in Tribeca.

The elevator ride to the observation deck is an experience in itself. You’ll get to see a timelapse of the development of lower Manhattan from pre-colonial times to the present day.

When you reach the observatory you’ll find yourself breathless. The One World Trade Center (previously called the Freedom Tower) offers the most epic views of New York City.

Fun fact:  The One World Trade Center stands at 1,776 feet (including the spire), paying tribute to the year America declared independence.

Tribeca is still relatively unknown to New York City tourists and is not on everyone’s must-see list. It’s one of the most expensive neighborhoods in all of Manhattan. Therefore, you’ll often find celebrities residing here or own property in this area. Hollywood actor, Robert De Niro even founded one of the most popular restaurants in Manhattan, Tribeca Grill. The area has a lot of history as well. Just take in the the old industrial buildings and the cobblestone streets. It’s a very rustic looking neighborhood and sometimes it is hard to believe that this is one of the most popular neighborhoods for New York families.

There are a lot of things to do in Tribeca and we’re here to guide you in the right direction!

Grand Banks

Grand_Banks_New_York_von_Loving_New_York_02_1600x960_1280x640

Water, a great view of Manhattan and a great atmosphere – the location is simply the best. You are sitting on a historic ship called F/V Sherman Zwicker on the Hudson River and can enjoy New York from the water when the weather is fine. The place also serves great drinks and seafood.

Take a Stroll Around Tribeca

Things_To_Do_In_Tribeca_181012130243010

Looking at the old industrial buildings and the cobblestone streets, it is hard to believe that this is one of the most popular neighborhoods for New York families. It’s also one of the most expensive neighborhoods in the city as well. In the past, it was mainly a home to the textile industry. It’s very similar to SoHo . Once the industry started to retreat in the 1970s, artists and creatives started to flock to Tribeca . Over the years, Tribeca has become a hotspot among New York’s wealthy and celebrities.

The Ghostbusters' Fire Station - Ladder 8

Movie freaks and fans of the classic Ghostbusters, if you’re ever in Tribeca, you have to visit the fire station that was featured in the movie Ghostbusters. It’s an iconic location and even has the Ghostbusters logo on the sidewalk. “Who you gonna call?”

Visit New York smallest museum: The Mmuseumm

Museum of New York

New York’s smallest museum and an absolute insider tip: Here a freight elevator was converted into a museum. The exhibits are treasures from all over the world that present their view of life. In short: Small miracles – more really doesn’t fit in the elevator. A view through the window is possible at any time of the day or night – but this museum is only open on Saturdays and Sundays from 12 to 6 pm.

For us this unique spot had to be part of our list of the Best Museum in New York !

Take a photo of the Staple Street Skybridge

Staple Street Skybridge in Tribeca

The Staple Street Skybridge in Tribeca is something special: it is located on Jane Street, which is one of the smallest streets in New York, measuring just two blocks long.

If you stand on Staple Street and look up, you’ll see this architectural highlight that connects two buildings. Originally, these buildings belonged to New York Hospital, which is no longer here.

By a Book from The Mysterious Bookshop

Books

58 Waren Street is home to probably the most unusual bookstore in Manhattan. The Mysterious Bookshop mainly sells crime books, thriller and horror stories. Most of the product their is about murders, blood and their investigations. It’s different, special and really worthwhile.

New York Art Center

new_york_art_center_tribeca_art_walk_191004132208005

In light of the decline of retail and the rise of digital advertising, the New York Art Center is painting a new art scene in TriBeCa, combining the two with an innovative approach: a rotating, in-person gallery meets an app to purchase original artworks from artists all over the world.

Tribeca Film Festival

tribeca_film_festival_170112104821001

In 2002, Robert De Niro and producer Jane Rosenthal created the Tribeca Film Festival to bring life back to the neighborhood near Ground Zero. New York City suffered greatly from the attacks of September 11, 2001, and Di Niro’s intention in creating the festival was to help New Yorkers out of this deep-seated depression and give them reason to celebrate again.

They all come to the Tribeca Film Festival, the big names in the film industry. In addition to various awards, film premieres and short film presentations, every year there is also a show program worth seeing with music and after-show parties.

When will the Tribeca Film Festival Take place?

Nancy's Whiskey Pub: Have a drink in New York City's oldest Bar

Inside Nancy

Everything in “Nancy’s Whiskey Pub” seems to be from another time – the bar, the furniture, the glasses – just everything. In the small bar you can choose from a small selection of whiskeys in addition to the classic beers – and relax among locals while looking at the One World Trade Center.

City Vineyard at Pier 26

City Vineyard Pier 26 New York

Are you looking for an nice bar with great wines, located directly on the water and with a great view of the One World Trade Center? Then the City Vineyard at Pier 26 is THE spot for you!

220117180730001_Pier_25_Hudson_River_Park

During warm weather days, Tribeca is flocking with locals and activities. One of the things to do in Tribeca is to go check out Pier 25. It’s great for children since there is a new playground and is hooked up with play equipment. There’s also an 18-hole miniature golf course as well. This part of Tribeca can get quite busy over the summer.

Here you find our complete guide to Piers in NYC .

Brandy Library: One of New Yorks best Whiskey Bars

Brandy_Library_Bar_Tribeca_NYC_190527090313001

Even if the name suggests otherwise: the Brandy Library has a huge selection of even very rare whiskeys in its program, which will make the heart of every whiskey fan beat faster. More than 1,000 bottles are used as decoration, especially in the evening it looks like a library of high-proof drinks. What we found very exciting are their events where you can learn more about Bourbons, Cognacs etc. Conclusion: Super-atmospheric and a real highlight!

Jenga Building

Tribeca_181012130243013

The skyscraper “56 Leonard” is probably one of the most striking buildings in New York. New Yorkers call it only Jenga Building, because it looks like the oversized version of the popular game. You can’t go inside the 60-story building, but it’s a really nice photo op. Afterwards, go to the 2 Hands Café across the street, it’s one of my favorite cafes in Tribeca !

Have a romantic dinner at Tribeca Grill

Tribeca_Grill_New_York_181012130243009

The Tribeca Grill is the perfect place for a special dinner, lunch or brunch. The restaurant is the address for good wine and very good food. The service is great and the reputation of Robert De Niro’s restaurant is hard to beat. Accordingly it is not exactly cheap, but worth every cent. Reserve a table in advance in any case. No matter when – it is always well attended.

Have fun with your kids at Pier 25 Playground

210205164222001_Pier_25_Playground_Spielplatz

The playground is located in Hudson River Park, which also has mini golf, beach volleyball and a snack bar, among other things. In addition to Pier 25, there is also Pier 51 Playground in Hudson River Park.

Children’s Museum of Manhattan

Museum

The Children’s Museum of Manhattan (CMOM) is a popular destination for children and their families in New York City. There are many exhibits and programs designed to stimulate children’s imaginations, curiosity and intellect. Along with the Children’s Museum in Brooklyn, I consider it one of the finest museums for children in NYC (more than 350,000 people visit CMOM on the Upper West Side each year).

Attractions in Tribeca

Many of New York’s major New York attractions  like the 9/11 Memorial & Museum or the One World Observatory are located in Lower Manhattan and are therefore easily reachable from Tribeca:

01 New York Art Center

211126133640001_Art_Fairs-1

02 Independent Art Fair

Despite having the words “art fair” in its name, the Independent Art Fair in New York strives to go beyond the concept by embracing different art styles beyond conventional and popular genres. It traces its beginnings to the Dia Center for the Arts in Beacon, New York. The eventual success of the museum and foundation led to the Chelsea neighborhood becoming a thriving art community.

03 Jenga Building

05 staple street skybridge, 06 take a stroll around tribeca, 07 the ghostbusters' fire station - ladder 8.

Movie freaks and fans of the classic Ghostbusters, if you’re ever in Tribeca , you have to visit the fire station that was featured in the movie Ghostbusters. It’s an iconic location and even has the Ghostbusters logo on the sidewalk. “Who you gonna call?”

08 Tribeca Film Festival

The Tribeca Film Festival has grown over the years, and now all the big names from the film industry show up each spring. There are many associated events like short film presentations, film premiers, and various awards.

Western_Union_Building

09 Western Union Building

The Western Union Building on Broadway was also built in the 1930s and is distinguished by its stylized ornamentation and striking aluminum facade. The building was a pioneer in the use of aluminum in architecture and was imitated by many other buildings in New York.

If you want to check it out, you can’t miss it. It is located in Tribeca not far from Jenga Tower called 56 Leonard Street (56 Leonard).
